Safari Browser For PC

Well, I guess it was only a matter of time, but Apple have released the latest version of their browser called Safari and it looks like it’s available for Windows users too!

I’ve not had chance to install it yet, but I will do soon. In the meantime why not check it out for yourself?

Download Safari 3 Public Beta from the Apple website.

Update - 20 June 2007: Below is a comparison between Safari & Firefox, you’ll hopefully see that the Safari image is more vibrant.

It’s definitely beta - no location bar drop-down box, renders font sizes a little larger than the other guys and bolds text a little, control schemes are a little tied to the button+click paradigm of the Mac.

Some folks are having issues getting it to work at all with the default installed plug-ins. It worked out of the box for me.

But, if folks use Opera or Firefox on a daily basis, as most informed surfers do, then Safari probably won’t be anything special.

I guess I’m most curious as to how similar it renders on a PC compared to a Mac.

We’ll see what it’s like when the final version is released though.

Safari is the *only* web browser on the PC that shows high quality colours. c|net today explains why:

You know what? You’re totally correct! I recently uploaded some images to Flickr and they looked rather washed out (in IE & FF), but yet viewing them in the new Safari browser they are vibrant again!

Seriously people, test it out!

Thanks for the post veggie dude.

One point - the older photos uploaded to Flickr look the same - it’s just my most recent ones. So I’m guessing Flickr must have changed something recently too.

Just thought I’d point out that I meant keyboard-mouse click paradigm in my post above.

I’ve updated the original post with a comparison image of screenshots. You should see that the Safari screenshot is more vibrant.

There is a major Mac-ism I’m not keen on:

Hitting ‘Backspace’ doesn’t go back a page, neither does the back button on my Logitech mouse - this is annoying and not user friendly!

what the hell are you talking about ? a browser doesnt change how an image looks LOL

Have you actually tested it out?

I don’t recommend the Safari 3 beta for Mac users.

I like Safari, but I had to uninstall my upgrade of the 3-beta even after several updates because of multiple problems with the way the browser behaved. I find it very unusual for Mac software to be released in such a state. Luckily, an Uninstaller was included in the package that restored my 2.0.4 installation, which works great.

I’ve just gotten back to using Safari again after using various Mozilla-related browsers for a couple years. I’m appreciating the stream-lined feel, and the better Mac integration, but I do miss the intuitive keyboard commands of Firefox. On the Mac, pressing Delete does function as a Back button in Safari (Shift+Delete goes forward), but I haven’t figured out the keyboard commands for navigating Tabs (in Firefox, this could be done with Ctrl+Tab or Shift+Ctrl+Tab).

I too am pretty interested in learning about the PC Safari experience, especially about presentation consistency across platforms.
